Welcome to Mahj Society
The Mahj Society is a welcoming place to learn American Mahjong, strengthen your game and connect with others around the table.
Founded by Karla and Lesley, we offer beginner lessons, guided play, private instruction and social Mahjong experiences at our home base in Melrose. We also bring the Mahj to private homes, clubs, workplaces and special events throughout the Greater Boston surrounding area.
No experience is necessary. Just pull up a chair, and we will teach you everything you need to know.

Please use link above while we build our registration page. Please include which class you are interested in. Mahj 101 classes run Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. Mahj 102 is last Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm.
Learn
Curious about Mahjong but unsure where to begin? We make learning American Mahjong approachable, social and fun.
Our hands-on lessons take you from opening the box to playing a complete game. We provide the tiles, teaching materials and plenty of encouragement. No previous experience is needed.
Mahj 101 Three Lesson Beginner Series
$175 per person
Our recommended course for anyone new to Mahjong.
During three welcoming two-hour lessons, you will learn:
• The tiles and terminology
• How to read the National Mah Jongg League card
• How to identify and build a hand
• The Charleston
• Jokers, exposures and calling tiles
• The flow and rules of the game
• How to play a game
All Mahjong sets and teaching materials are provided.
Mahj 102 Intermediate Stratgy Class
$65 per person
Strategy and Confident Play
Know the basics but still find yourself second-guessing your hand Mahj 102 will help you make quicker, more confident decisions while enjoying plenty of guided play.
Together, we’ll explore how to recognize your strongest options, make purposeful Charleston choices and know when to stay the course—or pivot when the tiles lead you in a new direction.
You’ll learn how to:
• Select a hand with greater confidence
• Find connections between different hands
• Make stronger Charleston decisions
• Decide which tiles to keep, pass and discard
• Recognize when to stay the course and when to pivot
• Use jokers and exposures more strategically
• Improve your speed and awareness at the table
• Begin making thoughtful defensive choices

Private Lessons
Learn at your own pace with instruction customized to your experience, questions and goals.
Single Private Lesson - $125
One personalized 90-minute session at our Melrose location.
Three Private Lessons- $330
Three personalized 90-minute sessions, a savings of $45.
In-home private lessons are also available. Additional travel pricing may apply based on location.
Social Open Play
$10 per person
Relaxed, social play for players who are comfortable playing independently. Bring your current National Mah Jongg League card and enjoy a seat at the table.
Guided Open Play
$20 per person
Perfect for newer players who would still like a little support. We will be nearby to answer questions, clarify rules and help you navigate the card as you build confidence.
Advance registration is required. Space is limited so that every table has a comfortable and welcoming experience.
We Bring the Mahj to You
Gather your friends and let us create a fun and memorable Mahjong experience for your group. We provide the sets, instruction and everything needed to get your guests playing.
